Crafting Community: How Creative Hobbies & Spaces Can Help Women & Girls Unwind & Connect.

Updated: Jun 19

After a year of Studio Mooi welcoming guests to sit down with us and create, there’s one thing we’ve come to notice: there's something profoundly transformative about the phrase "girls just wanna have fun." It's not just a catchy line from a Cyndi Lauper song; it encapsulates the essence of an empowering movement where women and girls come together to unleash their creativity, create art, and revel in the joy of playful expression. In honour of International Women's Day on March 8th, let's dive into what it means to have a space where women and girls can get together, create together, and how creative hobbies & spaces can help women & girls unwind & connect.

Girls having fun at Studio Mooi

When girls and women gather to engage in creative endeavours together, whether it's painting, crafting, or any other form of artistic expression, magic happens. It's more than just the act of creation itself; it's about the energy that emerges when like-minded individuals join forces to explore their imaginations and push the boundaries of their creativity. Whether adult women sharing a tearful personal reflection over watercolour painting, or young girls singing along to a Taylor Swift playlist during a crochet class (and we’ve had the pleasure of participating in both of these moments), there is a deep longing for this joyful energy and sense of connection.

One of the most beautiful aspects of these gatherings is the sense of community they foster. Women coming together in a supportive environment, free from judgment and competition, inspire each other to reach new heights. There's an unspoken understanding that everyone's contribution is valued and celebrated, regardless of skill level or experience.

In these spaces, creativity flourishes. Ideas bounce off one another, sparking new insights and possibilities. Collaborations form organically as women and girls pool their talents and resources to bring their visions to life. The results are often breathtaking, a testament to the power of collective creativity.

But perhaps the most magical aspect of "girls just wanna have fun" gatherings is the sense of liberation they provide. In a society that often imposes rigid standards and expectations on women and girls, these spaces offer a reprieve from the pressures of conformity. Here, there are no rules or boundaries, only endless possibilities waiting to be explored. And although these spaces are rare, Studio Mooi is proud to identify as one of these spaces for all women and girls to explore their creative freedom, uplift one another, and just have fun!

Through artful play, women reclaim our agency and redefine what it means to be creative. We embrace our unique voices and perspectives, using art as a tool for self-expression and empowerment. Our creativity knows no bounds.

Moreover, these gatherings serve as a reminder of the importance of self-care and nourishment. In the midst of busy schedules and competing demands, carving out time for creative expression is a form of radical self-love. It's a chance to reconnect with oneself, to tap into the wellspring of inspiration that lies within and emerge renewed and revitalized.

As we celebrate the magic of "girls just wanna have fun," let us remember the transformative power of creativity and community. Let us cherish these spaces as sacred ground where women and girls can come together to play, explore, and create without inhibition. And let us never underestimate the profound impact that artful expression can have on our lives and the world around us. After all, when girls and women come together to have fun, there's no limit to what they can achieve.

At Studio Mooi, we pride ourselves on being a safe space where everyone can come together and express themselves creatively. But on this International Women's day, we especially pride ourselves in being a safe space for all women and girls to express themselves freely, without judgment, and experience the sheer joy of exploring our artistic and creative sides together with a "come as you are" philosophy. We thank our women artists and facilitators for fostering such welcoming environment; Studio Mooi is here to support and root for you every step of the way. Come and have fun with us!
